Parallel Houses & The Sense of Mirrored Souls

Parallel Houses & The Sense of Mirrored Souls

There is someone in my life who seems eerily familiar and in sync with me. This person has Neptune conjunct my Sun. So, I’m willing to believe that in swapping life stories Neptune, the planet of illusion, is causing us to express memories in such a way that we mirror one another. A lot of the milestones in our lives are similar, so are our pastimes, and we even have the same grade school story of losing the city-wide spelling bee at the last second by one word and then returning the next year to finally win (different cities). (Nerdy I know. But it’s all uncanny.) While the Neptune-Sun aspect certainly is causing my ego or sense of self to bounce off and reflect off this person, I’m confident that our parallel houses & axes also contribute to this. We have the same signs on all our houses, making us approach every area of life with the same sensibilities. Our suns are square. We have tons of squares and...

Sonny detonates Cher: the Pent-Up Energy of Intercepted Houses, Trapped Signs

Sonny detonates Cher: the Pent-Up Energy of Intercepted Houses, Trapped Signs

Like Cher, Ayn Rand, & Oprah, I have a pair of interlopers in my chart. Interloping signs — ones that invade territories ruled by others signs with an attempt to hijack them. I confess I have a special love for these  signs and the desperate desires to which they drive me. Astrologically & formally speaking, I’m referring to intercepted signs, signs that are not on the cusp of a house and have no house of their own to rule. Instead they begin and end in a house ruled by the previous sign. The belief in astrology is that the energy of such signs is very hard to access because the lack of a cusp is like the lack of a doorway to the sign. They occur in opposing pairs: Cancer-Capricorn, Libra-Aries, etc. Look at your chart and see if you have a sign squashed completely inside of one house with no cusp of its own to rule. It will be very important to you. And will greatly define your...

Venus Bites Neptune: the Romanticizing of Pain & Suffering

Venus Bites Neptune: the Romanticizing of Pain & Suffering

Some lovers find pain fascinating, a bit sacred and even beautiful in romance and sexuality. Such people — like former erotic cutter Angelina Jolie, the original masochist Leopold von Sacher Masoch, the ear-slicing Vincent Van Gogh, and myself — have strong Venus-Neptune aspects. Any art with struggle, loss, tragedy and intense pain — whether emotional or physical in texture — I am drawn to. My best romances have been tragic. It seems like that which is beautiful is made overwhelmingly so by the contrast of pain. Can one know light without dark? Painless people would be repulsed by this. Heretics! They do not understand. I believe the strong mesh of Venus energy — which is romantic and idealistic– with Neptune, Pisces, or the 12th House, which deals in self-sacrifice, self-destruction, loss, and suffering, can lay a foundation for the native to not only enjoy, but idealize and romanticize pain. Such Neptunian people see the beauty in pain, the way others cannot, particularly if they have exacerbating factors affecting this...

Venus in Sag Revelations from a Cab Driver: Time vs. Texture

Venus in Sag Revelations from a Cab Driver: Time vs. Texture

“Time makes Lovers feel like they’ve got something real — but you and me we know we’ve got nothing but time.” — Culture Club, “Time” A few years ago I visited NYC for the first time. It felt like home. All the characters that could be in my fiction, simply walking the street. The Leo Love of My Life that I constantly mention (ad nauseum) and mourn is from Brooklyn. It felt strange to be in the city without him leading me around. Though I had lost him years ago, I still mourned, as obsessive, contemplative Scorpios do, and the intensity of being in New York created such a keen sense of loss for what I felt was my one true “soul mate” that it was too much for me — until I met a cabbie. The great thing about having Jupiter (the planet of god, experience and philosophical revelation) tightly conjunct Mercury (communication), Neptune (spirituality), and Venus is the tendency for the Universe to speak to me in...

Scorpio Sun on the MidHeaven & The Inability to Reveal Yourself Professionally

Scorpio Sun on the MidHeaven & The Inability to Reveal Yourself Professionally

Tonight I just realized that having a Scorpio Sun on the Midheaven, a public-professional axis, makes one create by necessity a superficial career identity. There’s simply no way around it. It’s a conflict of energies. The Sun conjunct Midheaven aspect pushes the Sun to reveal itself to the world at large but the Scorpio energy resists and strikes a compromise by having a very defined, private alternate ego. I have NEVER allowed my professional demeanor to reveal the slightest personal thing about me. I’ve heard that Scorpio Risings need some form of alter ego, since the rising is such an external place for that Plutonic energy. Now, I suddenly realize tonight that Scorpio Suns on the Midheaven face this same conflict. And I wonder how many of us do alters too? My Scorpio Sun is 5 degrees conjunct the Midheaven. My progressed sun, which denotes the current direction of my life, is 2 degrees conjunct. Houston. We have a problem. The closer my Sun gets to the Midheaven the...

What is Monogamy? What is Cheating? Venus in Sagittarius, Trine Pluto, Opposite Saturn Forces a Different View.

What is Monogamy? What is Cheating? Venus in Sagittarius, Trine Pluto, Opposite Saturn Forces a Different View.

NOTE: Since writing this I have fully embraced monogamy and exclusive bonds. Let’s say we have one life — and we, as presently incarnated, do. Let’s say sex is a sense. Like sight, audio, touch, taste, scent, and the sixth sense of intuition. I, in fact, call sexuality my 7th sense — and the greatest one because it is the culmination of all my physical, metaphysical, and mystical responses to life, people, and energy. (Scorpio Sun in 9th house) Let’s say I fall in love and even marry and use this sexuality to communicate and bond with the Beloved. Why does it then become off limits to use elsewhere? How does using my private senses, my private sexuality become “cheating?” Must the Beloved OWN something as personal and private as my sexuality. That is a ludicrous concept. I know Scorpios like myself like to possess forever and exclusively. However, with Venus in Sagittarius opposite Saturn, the planet of tradition and structure I feel that I peer into a little...

Am I the only one who thinks a sex bed in a temple is really appealing?

Am I the only one who thinks a sex bed in a temple is really appealing?

On Oprah today, a young girl who used to belong to a religious polygamist cult talked about there being secret beds in the temple for consummation. Oprah acted like it was some shameful discovery. The woman said “I saw them. It was very sad.” Now, I don’t want to talk about the Warren Jeffs cult. That was crazy and evil (not because of beliefs or age, but because it restricted knowledge and independent choice)… but getting beyond that …. a sex bed in a religious temple seems like a beautiful thing to me. Can you imagine getting married and then having everyone leave so you can consummate the relationship at the altar? OMG. That is super super spiritual to me (& erotic, I won’t lie). I mean… sex is not evil or dirty or demonic (even though I know the Dalai Lama recently said sex always leads to trouble and said abstinence was mentally and spiritually better. He lies!). Isn’t sex a blend of the physical and the higher...

Prince’s “Starfish and Coffee” — An Analysis

Prince’s “Starfish and Coffee” — An Analysis

My sobriquet — “Synthia Rose” — is derived from the Prince classic “Starfish & Coffee,” which for more than 15 years has been my personal anthem of nonconformity in this hyperconformist world. An Analysis : NOTE: For those unfamiliar with the song, it might help to first read the lyrics below first. I had listened to this seemingly simplistic and whimsical song for years without truly deciphering its meaning. Then one day, as a sophomore in college, I was sitting in my dorm room feeling forlorn and misunderstood because my off-center views infuriated everyone. My beliefs on relationships, race, sex, the Divine, and everything seemed to be just left of mainstream. Then, the underlying message of the song crystallized for me and I was caught up in a swooning epiphany that still dazzles me to this day. At that moment — With the Sign of the Times album playing casually in the background, “Starfish and Coffee” — with it’s jarring alarm bell – needled into my thoughts and gave...
