Mars Vs. Pluto: The Battle To Dominate Scorpio
Mars and Pluto co- rule Scorpio, suspending the 8th sign of the Zodiac between the principles of self-determinism and fate.
Mars — the planet associated with self-initiative and self expression — gives the Scorpio man and Scorpio woman an overwhelming need to self-assert, to be self-made, to carve their identity out of the stone of opposition with nothing more than their self-reliance and will power.
Pluto is quite the opposite, endowing Scorpio with belief in forces beyond self; Pluto is linked to psychic energy, cosmic connections, astrology and the unseen mystical world, to which Scorpio turns to receive instruction from Destiny, Fate and the Great Unknown.
Pluto is the reason that Scorpio won’t move an inch without receiving a sign, feeling, hunch, intuition or sixth sense to give them confirmation before deciding something important.
Fate and Destiny — the opposite of Martian self-will — is of distinct interest to Scorpio over all the other Zodiac signs. Scorpio sees harmonizing with Fate as a mystical and spiritual occurrence. It is the Pluto-influenced Scorpio who moves through life looking for fated connections and destined love, while the true Martian persona would just create love and not waste time with soul mate mumble jumble.
And yet, despite respect for Destiny, Scorpio loathes being at the whim of Forces beyond his or her control. Scorpios must regulate their own spheres and their own lives at all times.
Thus, Stingers live in conscious and constant suspension between the need for self-rulership and the hunger to merge with The Great Rhythm Out There.
This struggle created by Scorpio’s rulers causes us to question… Who really rules Scorpio? Which planet is more responsible for the quintessential Scorpio nature?
Ultimately, it depends on how strong each Scorpio ruling planet is in the natal chart. In general however, we can make some conclusions about this battle.
Mars vs. Pluto
Mars is overt in action. Pluto is clandestine, the master of subterfuge. Pluto wins this battle; Scorpios are rarely overt or obvious in their behavior unless they are marked with strong fire energy. Generally, you don’t know what a Scorpio is doing or has done until the action has long been executed.
Mars is a no lightweight when it comes to taking hold of a goal. This tenacious sign tackles a job with fierce conviction and eagerness, completing tasks like prize fighter: quick, precise and not getting bogged down by details.
Pluto is a bit different. Pluto isn’t quick. Much time can be lost because Pluto loves obsessing over details. Pluto wins again because Scorpios get their obsession and compulsion from Pluto, causing them to focus extravagantly over concepts and situations as they analyze every tidbit and angle — fanatically.
Associated with Spring and the first house, Mars starts the Zodiac wheel. It is the great initiator and the first creator; Mars energy tends to build things before other astro-energy. Pluto may not be the first to create, but it can do double what Mars can do: Pluto both creates and destroys. In fact, it creates through destruction; no other sign performs this trick. Pluto energy will tear you down and then exhume you from the dead. It will take your breath and then resuscitate you.
This type of creative dynamic is responsible for Scorpio being a healer, a restorer and a regenerator as well as a demolisher and menace. In the wrong hands, Pluto’s inverse creative energy is responsible for Scorpio being a self-destroyer and a self-saboteur.
Mars is a rough lover focused on self. This planet loves anything aggressive and promising to erupt into a physical contest. Mars is so dedicated to the physical dimension, that it doesn’t bother much with the emotional or spiritual. Not so with Pluto. Pluto is deep, mystical and metaphysical. Pluto focuses on the soul and emotions so deep you have to mine for them.
Winner: Depends on the Mood.
ScorpioLand Decision: It’s a draw. Pluto and Mars are both highly sexual planets. In astrology, Mars is responsible for the physical sex drive while Pluto is responsible for compulsive sexual intimacy and those wonderful intangible sexual sparks.
In the end, Scorpio suns cannot escape either Scorpio ruling planet. They both mold the personality. A Scorpio ruled by Mars in the first house and Pluto in the 8th house is very different from a Scorpio with Mars in the 12tth house and Pluto in the 7th.
The house, sign and aspects of both Scorpio ruling planets will shape the uniqueness of each Scorpio and determine what ruling planet is most influential on a personal level.
All Scorpios– much like Aquarius who is ruled by freedom-loving Uranus AND stodgy, restrictive Saturn — will always experience a clash between the values of their rulers.
Should Scorpio just merge the philosophies of Mars and Pluto and create their own fate. Isn’t that oxymoronic….since that which is man-made isn’t really fate at all? Oh well, that little detail won’t stop this Zodiac Sign.
